.....today Layla wanted to walk into preschool by herself. There is a teacher who greets the kids at the outside door and one who stands inside by their coat hooks and ushers them into their room. When we got to the outside door of school and Mrs. Rhodes was standing there greeting the kids Layla turned to me and said, "good-bye." This isn't our normal routine. I usually walk her all the way in. I asked her if she wanted me to go in with her and she said, "no, I'm fine." I could see in her eyes that she was a little unsure, but I could also see determination. She really wanted to try it. So, I turned around and left with my heart in my throat. I love her independence. I get her independence. Believe me, I get it! And, I have great respect for it. But when I look at this picture I took of us walking together on Sunday I am so thankful that she's still holding onto me.A funny side note to this touching little story, when I went to pick Layla up after school her teacher asked that I walk her all the way into her classroom when dropping her off. HA!

I love your stories. You're an inspiring mother.
oh my...i could cry. good thing i have a couple more years to gear up for this! bennett just started walking last week (finally). he does this adorable floppy, bouncy, walk that makes me think of a baby duck.
What a wonderful picture. I remember exactly what it was like when the girls decided they didn't need me to walk them to the door anymore, it just about breaks your heart. And let me tell ya, it doesn't get any easier when they leave for kindergarten! Absorb every moment.
Oh Jen, I totally get this story. The other night I was teary because I realized that Ethan just doesn't have much "time" for sitting on mommy's lap these days. He's so busy and cuddling with mommy is just not what this 2 1/2 year old is about right now. So, last night after he fell asleep, I marched right into his room, picked him up and rocked him in my arms for as long as I wanted...sometimes we mommies just have to take matters into our own hands ;)
